It was March 23, 1775 when Founding Father Patrick Henry uttered those famous words at the Second Virginia Convention in Richmond: “give me liberty, or give me death.” Richmond was not only an important city during the Revolutionary War, but also served as the second and final capital city of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Today Richmond is home to the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and one of the 12 Federal Reserve banks. It’s also a great city for golf. The semi-private Tradition Golf Club at Brickshire is a Curtis Strange signature course located about 30 miles southeast of downtown Richmond. The course is known for its considerable elevation changes and replica holes from prominent courses like Augusta National and Pinehurst #2. The Belmont Golf Course in Henrico was the site of the 1949 PGA Championship, the only major championship ever hosted in the state of Virginia. The Arnold Palmer-designed, private Federal Club in Glen Allen is one of the most scenic golf courses in the state. The layout is challenging enough for experienced golfers to test their mettle, while rookies are able to relax and enjoy the surroundings while sharpening their skill sets.
There are numerous different options for youth golf in greater Richmond. LPGA*USGA Girls Golf is a nonprofit that serves 70,000 girls in 400 communities worldwide, including Midlothian, Virginia. The First Tee of Greater Richmond has youth golf camps in both the spring and winter. Windy Hill Sports provides individual private golf lessons for all youth under the age of 18.
Golf Digest ranked Sam Snead the third best golfer of all time in 2000, behind only Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan. Born in Ashwood, Snead holds the record for most PGA Tour wins in history, with 82. He won seven majors in his career, including three Masters and three PGA Championships. He never won the U.S. Open, but finished tied for second four times. Snead nephew, J.C., was no slouch as a golfer either, winning eight PGA Tour events in his career.
