It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Golf.com named Florida the number-1 state for anyone who loves the sport. The temperature rarely dips below 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the Sunshine State, while the average low temperature for January in Miami is around 60. Needless to say, the golf scene in south Florida is vast, with over 1,000 golf courses and four PGA Tour stops, all at public venues. PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens hosts the Honda Classic, which is typically the first PGA event of the year in Florida. It takes place on the Champion course, one of five courses on the property. The Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables was designed and built by Donald Ross in 1925. The course features elevated greens, luxuriant fairways, and of course splendid views of the Giralda Tower-like hotel from all 18 holes. Trump National Doral Miami is the ultimate golf experience for anyone who loves the sport. It is home to four unique courses, including the world-renowned Blue Monster and its very difficult 18th hole. It was a featured PGA Tour stop for 55 straight years until 2017. But the history of the course is undeniable, as golf greats Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and Tiger Woods won a total of nine championships on the Blue Monster.
All five golf facilities at Miami-Dade County Parks offer junior golf programs and private instruction. The Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship is widely recognized as one of the premier junior golf tournaments in the world. Lexi Thompson, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods are just a few big names who competed in the tournament since 1963. The Doral Publix Junior Golf Classic was represented by 45 countries and 600 young golfers in its 2017 tournament alone.
Beautiful weather in south Florida, along with numerous golf courses, are the reasons so many professional golfers own homes in Miami. There are also many successful golfers who were born and/or raised here. Jason Dufner, who won the 2013 PGA Championship, is a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale. Brooks Koepka, the 2017 U.S. Open winner, was born in West Palm Beach and attended Cardinal Newman High School.
