San Antonio Golf

backyard putting green The first thoughts that come to the minds of outsiders when asked about San Antonio typically include The Alamo and River Walk. The city is also known for the San Antonio Spurs, who have dominated the NBA to the tune of five championships since 1999. But an underrated aspect of the second-most populous city in Texas is its golf scene. The Oaks at TPC San Antonio, located in the city’s Cibolo Canyons area, is home to the PGA’s Texas Open, which became the Valero Texas Open in 2002. Tommy Armour III set the 72-hole record for lowest total strokes (254) on the PGA Tour at the Valero Texas Open in 2003. The record stood until 2017 when Justin Thomas won the Sony Open by seven strokes (253). Casual golfers and those striving for professional glory have plenty of quality options for 18-hole courses. The panoramic views and tree-lined fairways at the River Crossing Golf Club in nearby Spring Branch, have made it a favorite course among golf die-hards in the area. The private club has hosted several local tournaments over the years due to its popularity. The Alsatian Golf Club in Castroville is another local favorite due to its waterways, trees and hills on the back-9. The Quarry Golf Course, built on land formerly occupied by the Alamo Cement Plant, features a links-like front-9. The back-9 is known for the quarry pit and the waterfall on 17.

Junior Golf In San Antonio

The Kids on Course Golf Academy is one of the most comprehensive youth programs in the city. The nonprofit provides private lessons, host tournaments, and educational programs for kids as young as 2 years old. TGA Premier Golf is another youth program that teaches the fundamentals, while also hosting camps and leagues for more advanced players. The U.S. Kids Golf Foundation also holds several tournaments in San Antonio every year.

San Antonio PGA Players

immy Walker is by far the most accomplished and well-known professional golfer with ties to San Antonio. He graduated from Canyon High School in nearby New Braunfels in 1997 before playing collegiate golf at Baylor. He has six PGA Tour wins, including the 2016 PGA Championship and the 2015 Valero Texas Open. He beat Dustin Johnson and Jim Renner by one stroke at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 2014.
