Pueblo has a diverse city with a small town feel. It’s uniquely situated along the Colorado Rockies, within the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek confluence. It has a dry, desert climate at 4,600 feet above sea level. Pueblo is known as the “Steel City” due to being one the top steel-producing towns in the country. Pueblo is an attractive place to settle down due to having the lowest home prices of all Colorado cities, and its location along Interstate 25. The Pueblo Zoo is a popular family attraction with 350 animals exhibits. The El Pueblo History Museum tells the story of the town from its founding in 1842. Several groups, including Italians, Slovenians, and African Americans, have been in the town since the beginning. The museum tells their stories and provides a look into the past. Art lovers spend their time in the Sangre De Cristo Arts Museum. It showcases a wide variety of art from the American Southwest. Along with all the culture Pueblo has to offer, the city also has a nice golf scene.
Elmwood Golf Course is a city-owned course that recently got a $2 million makeover. Elmwood features an Executive Nine Hole par 30 course, along with the 18-hole par 70 course. It has thousands of trees, a pro shop, and restaurant, giving golfers the full experience. Walking Stick Golf Course is another municipal course. It was named second-best golf course in the entire state by Golf Digest in 1993. The 18-hole, par 72 course extends over 7,100 yards depending on tee location. Several major events, including the National Insurance Youth Classic and the Colorado Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, are held at Walking Stick. Desert Hawk at Pueblo West is located about 10 miles west of downtown. It has gorgeous mountain views and an overall relaxing, picturesque environment. The course is known for its fairways, sand traps, and water hazards that make the course challenging and fun for golfers of all skill levels.
The Walking Stick Junior Golf Academy not only has a great curriculum created by current and former PGA players, but also a framework that focuses on personal development and etiquette. Kids learn the fundamentals of golf by focusing on fine-motor skills and body movement that form the perfect golf swing. It offers programs for both beginners and experienced young golfers. Pueblo West Junior Golf has three-week programs for kids age five to 18. The courses are held at Desert Hawk and taught by former PGA players.
